My first visit to the ELR in 2020 took place on Sunday 5th of January. Locos in service that day were steam engine 52322 and Class 33 diesel 33109. At this time of the year there are no dining trains, so there are two long gaps or 'spare paths', and on this occasion the timetable had been modified even further due to trains not being able to run from Bury to Heywood due to a massive fire in a scrapyard next to a section of the line at Pimhole. Since I'm still not fully recovered from the illness that kept me out of action over the holiday period I stayed mainly on the platform at Rawtenstall as I really didn't have the energy to venture further down the line as I normally would have done. I also had a second short visit on Sunday 12th of January, it's still very quiet at this time of the year with nothing running in the spare paths, but it was nice to get out in the fresh air for a few hours. Locos in service were spamcan 'City of Wells' on the steam diagram, and Class 45 45108 on the diesel turns.
