Home / Railway Gallery / Standard Gauge Heritage Railways / East Lancashire Railway / ELR 2019 / ELR Summer Diesel Gala - July 4th to 6th 2019 [111]

One of the highlights of the year for me is usually the ELR’s Summer Diesel Gala which normally takes place in early July. This year the event ran over 3 days again, but on Thursday, Friday and Saturday rather than the more traditional Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This seemed like a good idea as it allowed the very popular steam hauled Dining Train to run on the Sunday and it also meant that there would be steam locos out for the benefit of casual visitors, who don’t always have the same liking for big dirty diesels that some of us have.

The ELR Diesel Group have one of the best collections of locos in the country, so we are normally spoiled rotten here, and with no fewer than 9 of them in service over the 3 days we were well catered for, and these included: D9531, D1501, D7629, 47765, D832, 50015, 37109, 33109, D5054 and 45108. As well as these there were also another 6 visiting locos, and these were: 56103, 33035, 20096, 20132, 20311 and 20314, the latter two having been supplied by Harry Needle railroad Company.

For the first time in many years I was there on all three days, with the first day spent around the Rawtenstall area, the second day at the Bury end of the line and Ramsbottom, and with a shorter visit later on the final, day to get a shot of the Class 50, which was the only one of the locos that I hadn’t photographed by then. All in all, a very enjoyable event spoiled only for me by that awful sunshine which as most visitors to the site will know is something that I am not a big fan of. Typically, after the event the weather changed completely and we have even had rain, clearly the weather controller just wanted to rub a little salt into the wound!:-)

A big thank you to all the organisers, staff, volunteers and loco owners for making this yet another top-class event, and well up to the usual very high diesel group standards. As I said at the start, this is always one of the highlights of the year for me.
